Call for Secretary-Treasurer Candidates

The APA Sustainable Communities Division will elect a new Secretary-Treasurer in August. This is an exciting opportunity for you to consider stepping forward to serve and help lead one of APA’s newest and most vibrant Divisions. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, June 3rd, 2016. On top of lending your skills to the responsibilities listed below, serving in this position allows you to grow your professional network, gives you the capability to directly influence the Division’s activities, and have the opportunity to meet and interact with leaders in the sustainability planning field.

2016 Annual Awards for Excellence in Sustainability Announced

American Planning Association – Sustainable Communities Division Announces the Winners of the Third Annual Awards for Excellence in Sustainability.

Phoenix, AZ- April 4, 2016 – The American Planning Association’s Sustainable Communities Division (SCD) announced the third annual Awards for Excellence in Sustainability at the National Planning Conference in Phoenix, AZ. The awards honor project, plans, policies, individuals, and organizations whose work is dedicated to supporting and growing sustainable communities. The SCD supports planners who are committed to planning for sustainable communities by integrating all aspects of sustainability into their work through the combined economic, social, and ecological factors that shape communities.

In partnership with the International and Urban Design and Preservation Divisions, the 2016 Awards for Excellence in Sustainability have expanded to an international audience, with nominations coming in from across the globe. The winners represent extraordinary achievements in 7 Sustainable Planning categories.

APA Sustainable Communities Division – Student Essay Contest

Submit your essay by February 27, 2016

The Sustainable Communities Division is welcoming submissions for its first ever student essay contest. The contest aims to recognize and foster the academic excellence of university students pursuing studies in fields related to sustainable community planning. One undergraduate student and one graduate student will receive an award of $250 each for essays on any subject that address items in the APA’s Comprehensive Plan Standards for Sustaining Places through a planning perspective. Winners will be recognized at the APA conference in Phoenix.

We are seeking judges for the student essay contest. Interested? Please express your interest to Mark Teschauer at markteschauer@gmail.com by February 20.
