Sustainability Champions

The Sustainable Communities Division has launched a pilot initiative called the Sustainability Champions Program. Our ultimate goal is to have a Sustainability Champion in each state/regional APA chapter. These Champions will form a national Sustainability Champions Network, which will be a resource for planners nationwide, and will have the scale and weight to influence the national discourse on sustainability. Champions will also keep SCD aware of emerging best practices at the local level in an effort to replicate success stories and limit failures.

Locally, Champions will promote sustainability within their chapters, perhaps by joining or instigating the development of sustainability committees, and networking with like-minded community leaders and colleagues in the allied professions (e.g., landscape architecture, architecture, engineering, etc.).

As this is a pilot program, in many ways its direction is up to the first wave of Champions and their passions and creativity.

Annual Awards for Excellence in Sustainability

The Awards for Excellence in Sustainability is an annual program that aims to honor projects, plans, policies, individuals and organizations whose work is dedicated to supporting and growing sustainable communities. Each year, the award winners are announced during the annual National Planning Conference.
