Call for Secretary-Treasurer Candidates

The APA Sustainable Communities Division will elect a new Secretary-Treasurer in August. This is an exciting opportunity for you to consider stepping forward to serve and help lead one of APA’s newest and most vibrant Divisions. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, June 3rd, 2016. On top of lending your skills to the responsibilities listed below, serving in this position allows you to grow your professional network, gives you the capability to directly influence the Division’s activities, and have the opportunity to meet and interact with leaders in the sustainability planning field.

Self-Nomination

If you would like to be a candidate for this position, please nominate yourself by submitting a short statement of your vision for the Division and a description of your relevant and related experience (600 words maximum), as well as a photo, to the Election Committee via this web portal, by 11:59 PM CST Friday, June 3rd, 2016. You can also nominate another member by submitting the same information.

Eligibility

Only current Division members who are also APA members may run for Division Secretary-Treasurer (if you are receiving this email directly from us, your membership is current and paid). Nominations will be reviewed and posted for voting in August.

Term of Office

The new Secretary-Treasurer will take office January 1, 2017, for a term of two years. At that point, the individual currently serving in the position will become Past Secretary-Treasurer for one year, and provide support and transition assistance to the new Secretary-Treasurer.  The new Secretary-Treasurer will also serve as Past Secretary-Treasurer for one year following the completion of his/her term.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Secretary-Treasurer include:

  • Participate as a member of the Executive Committee for SCD
  • Prepare minutes from Executive Committee calls (9-10 per year) and the annual business meeting
  • Submit proposed Bylaw changes and amendments to the membership
  • Manage Division funds in accordance with the Division budget
  • Assist the Chair in preparation of the annual budget
  • Ensure that all required reports and filings are made in a timely fashion to APA
  • Work with the Division Chair to solicit Division sponsorships
  • Serve as Past Secretary-Treasurer for a year after serving a two year term

No experience with the types of responsibilities above is required, though you should list all related and relevant experience in your nomination statement. The Past Secretary-Treasurer will provide training to ensure that the newly-elected Secretary-Treasurer is comfortable with the responsibilities for a minimum of the first year of the term.
