  • Second Place: One undergraduate student and one graduate will receive awards of $150 each.
Essays may be on any subject that address items in the APA’s Sustainability Policy Framework through a planning perspective. (You can review the framework at https://planning-org-uploaded-media.s3.amazonaws.com/document/Sustainability-Policy-Framework.pdf )
All submissions are due by Friday, March 16, 2018 at 5:00pm Pacific Time, and winners will be recognized at the Sustainable Communities Division’s Reception at the 2018 APA National Conference in New Orleans, LA.

Essay submissions must directly relate to one or more topics from the Sustainability Policy Framework and address them through a planning perspective. Ideal submissions will also address these topics through the Three E’s/P’s framework of sustainable development (Environment/Equity/Economy, People/Prosperity/Planet). Individuals may submit up to three different essays for consideration. All essays must adhere to the following formatting style:
  • Font: Calibri or Times New Roman, 12 point
  • Line Spacing: Double
  • Margins: 1” on all sides
  • Document File Type: .doc or .docx (no .pdf or other submissions)
  • File name: (Your Name) Student Essay Contest.doc(x) (i.e., John Doe Student Essay Contest.docx)
Your essay will be evaluated by members of the Sustainable Communities Division who are not enrolled in university coursework or are not academic staff at an institution with student participation in the contest. They will evaluate essays on the basis of the relation between the essay theme and sustainable community planning, quality of writing (mechanics, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, citation style adherence, etc.), organization, clarity of ideas and their proper support using references or a thorough explanation of reasoning, and other qualities related to rhetoric or author voice. All submissions are expected to include references.
Please use the following form to submit your essay, and good luck!
